Size / Population: Located in the Eastern Caribbean, the most northerly of the Leeward Islands, Anguilla is 35 sq. miles, 16 mi. long and 3 mi. wide at widest point. And has a population of 12,000.
Political Status: Anguilla is a British Overseas Territory. The Valley is the capital of Anguilla.
Language: English is the official language.
Currency: The legal tender is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar. U.S. dollars are widely used and accepted all over the island. Prices on menus, in hotels and for activities are generally quoted in US dollars. ATM’s are conveniently located around the island.
Electricity: 110 AC voltage; same as the U.S.
Time Zone: Atlantic Standard Time (one hour ahead of the eastern U.S.). Daylight Saving Time is not observed.
Communication: To dial Anguilla from the U.S. dial 1 + 264 + the 7-digit local number. For calls to the US dial 1 + area code + local number. Internet service is widely available. Check with your cell phone provider for international coverage.
Drinking Water: Water is potable; however, bottled water is available at hotels and convenience stores.
Transportation: Taxi drivers are knowledgeable, friendly and courteous and all rates are fixed (no meters). You can also hire a taxi to take you on a private island tour. Driving is on the left and the speed limit is 30 mph. To rent a car you'll need your valid driver's license from your resident country, and $20 to purchase a temporary Anguilla driver's license, available through car rental agencies. Drivers must be 21-25 years old (varies by rental company). Well-maintained rental cars and jeeps are readily available. Car seats are available at rental agencies. Bikes are available from about $10 per day, scooters from about $20 per day, both perfect for exploring the island (one main road and a handful of traffic lights make it easy).
Local Customs: Drinking age is 18. Tipping: generally 15-20% in restaurants; bellmen- $1 per bag; housecleaning staff- $1-$2 per day. Gratuity is sometimes added in restaurants so be sure and ask. Dress is casual. It is generally advisable to bring a light sweater or wrap for evenings. There are no nude beaches on Anguilla; topless sunbathing is not permitted. All beaches are public. There are no casinos.
