Barbados - Travel Tips

Note: All United States citizens are required to present a valid passport.

Size / Population: Barbados is 166 sq. miles with a population of 275,000.

Political Status: Independent. Member of British Commonwealth of Nations.

Language: English is the official language.

Currency: Barbados dollar. U.S. bills and travelers checks accepted at most places.

Electricity: 110 volts, same as U.S.

Time Zone: Atlantic Standard (one hour ahead of New York); Daylight Saving Time is not observed.

Communication: To call Barbados from the U.S. direct dial 1 + 246 + 7-digit local number.

Drinking Water: Water is safe to drink island wide.

Transportation: Rental cars are available. Must be 21-25 years old to rent motorized vehicles (varies by rental company and type of vehicle). You must buy a Barbados driver’s license for $10 Bds. Just present your U.S. license. Taxis are prevalent as well as tourist coaches.

Local Customs: Seat belt laws are strictly enforced. Driving is on the left. Tipping is the same as in the US: 15-20% depending on the service. Give porters and bellhops 50 cents per bag, taxi drivers 10-15% of the fare.
IMPORTANT INFO: The wearing of camouflage or military apparel is illegal in Barbados and clothing will be confiscated and persons charged accordingly.

Getting Married: U.S. citizens can legally get married in Barbados.
