Dominican Republic

Described by Christopher Columbus when he came ashore in 1492 as “the most beautiful land that human eyes have seen”, the Dominican Republic occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, and is the second largest country in the Caribbean. It is bordered on the north by the Atlantic Ocean and on the south by the sparkling Caribbean Sea. A relaxed ambience is a way of life on this extraordinarily beautiful island, and old world charm lingers throughout the island in language, food, customs and thought. The emphasis placed on music, dance, history and art is apparent everywhere as well as the usual island activities of sunbathing and water activities of all kinds along the popular coastal areas. Santo Domingo, the capital and cultural center of the Dominican Republic, offers visitors a cosmopolitan city with a vibrant nightlife including world-class casinos, fashionable shopping and superb dining. Dominican rum is the most popular drink, and the island’s Presidente beer rivals German brands for robust flavor. Dominican cigars are world-famous, and baseball is the national sport - American fans will recognize the Dominican Republic as the home of many top-ranked major league players. And last but not least, the Dominican Republic gave the world the merengue and other popular Latin dances.
Puerto Plata and Punta Cana and La Romana
Three of the island’s major seaside resort areas are Puerto Plata on the Atlantic coast and Punta Cana on the island’s easternmost Caribbean tip and La Romana on the southeastern coast, and all offer sun-seeking vacationers miles of unspoiled beaches, a myriad of outstanding all-inclusive hotel options along with championship golf courses, water sports and lively casino action.

Puerto Plata, on the island’s Amber Coast (so-called because of its rich deposits of amber), beckons visitors from all over the world to its golden sands where several European-flavored beach towns cater to honeymooners, families, golfers and water sports enthusiasts. Colorful Cabarete is considered the Caribbean’s windsurfing, kiteboarding and sailing mecca.

Family-friendly Punta Cana boasts one of the most stunning stretches of palm-studded white-sand beach in the Caribbean. Punta Cana is renowned for its exceptional all-inclusive resorts offering world-class golf courses, spas, lively discos and casino action. Horseback riding is a popular activity, and adventures into the interior via jeep safari or monster trucks are easily arranged.
Exciting La Romana is just an hour and a half from the colonial capital, Santo Domingo, and features beautiful beaches and outstanding championship golf courses. A perfect choice for divers and water sports enthusiasts as well as for culture buffs who are interested in the island's colorful history.
