Roatán is the largest, most developed and most popular of the Honduran Bay Islands. Located just 30 miles off the northern coast of Honduras, the island is about 37 miles long and not even 5 miles across at its widest point. It is surrounded by a rich living reef, making it a paradise for divers and snorkelers. There are dive shops galore on Roatán that cater to both the novice and experienced diver. Roatán offers a laid-back getaway with beautiful beaches, turquoise waters teeming with colorful fish, lush vegetation and an easy transition into island life with no high-rises, no traffic and no stress. The Meso-American reef system that rings the Bay Islands like a jeweled necklace is second in size only to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Roatán is big enough to keep the non-divers interested too, with adventure sports like zip-lining, sport fishing, fly-fishing on the flats and mangroves, swimming with the dolphins, ocean kayaking and jet skiing. Plus, eco-tourism activities, horseback riding, botanical gardens, butterfly and iguana farms, family recreational areas and winding dirt roads leading to small villages and isolated bays. If you just want to relax, parts of Roatán are as idyllic as any tourist brochure with clear turquoise water, powdery white sand and soaring coconut palms. Roatán is a not only one of the most beautiful islands in the Caribbean but the people are among the friendliest. The island has a charming mañana culture; businesses close for siesta, posted schedules sometimes mean nothing and nobody rushes around. Roatán is the perfect place to simply escape from the world, chill out and relax.
