Overview:
High on the Tilaran Mountain Range sits Monteverde, one of the most fascinating destinations in Costa Rica. The area is cool and verdant and rich in biodiversity, with a multitude of microclimates. Quaker families came from the U.S. to settle here in 1951, choosing to live in harmony with their surroundings and the Costa Rican families of the nearby village of Santa Elena. Later, their quest to preserve this area became an international conservation effort that today bears the fruit of the private non-profit Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, a unique balance between conservation and tourism that covers more than 40 square miles. Guided hikes or maps for “do-it-yourselfers” give access to the well-marked trails, waterfalls, rivers and observation areas where you will see an amazing variety of flora and fauna.

No one should leave Monteverde without having at least tried seeing a Quetzal, one of the most beautiful birds. Monteverde also hosts the largest variety of butterflies and moths in the world. Positioned atop the Continental Divide in northwestern Costa Rica, the reserve extends down both the Caribbean and Pacific slopes. The resulting combination of climatic and geographic factors creates temperature and humidity gradients, which change dramatically over relatively short distances.

The reserve supports four different bioclimatic communities (life zones). There are over 100 species of mammals, more than 400 species of birds, 120 species of amphibians and reptiles, and 3000 species of plants (among them 500 different kinds of orchids), as well as tens of thousands of insect species. Spectacular wildlife includes the Jaguar, Ocelot, Baird’s Tapir, Three-wattled Bellbird, Barenecked Umbrellabird and Resplendent Quetzal.

Activities in the Area:
Some activities include: Selvatura Park hanging bridges and canopy tour, day and night hiking in the Cloud Forest, horseback riding, birdwatching, Don Juan Coffee tour, insect museum, reptile and butterfly exhibits.

Transportation Tips:
Private transfers are recommended to and from the airport(s). Shared transfers are available from the LIR airport only. Driving distance is approximately 3.5 hours from LIR and 4 hours from SJO

Travel Tips:
Bring long pants, a camera, light jacket, binoculars, walking/hiking shoes, insect repellent, a small backpack for excursions and a rain jacket.
